Secret stairs and hedge tunnels at the magical Powis Castle and Gardens
National Trust’s Powis Castle is the perfect place to explore with kids. The day we visited the weather was hot, humid and a deep mist surrounded the mountains. It felt magical and full of myth and mystery.
Approaching from the road, the castle looms against the skyline and my sons were instantly transported to a world of knights and Welsh dragons.
Once inside the grounds we were wowed by the stunning terraced gardens, all clipped box hedges shaped into large, fluffy, cloud-like objects. Winding through hedge tunnels, along gravel pathways, the boys ran ahead finding secret steps down onto hidden terraces, the odd statue leaping into view.
At the bottom was the most welcoming National Trust cafe serving cakes, cream teas and coffee – much needed after the walk down and delicious as always. After a quick pit-stop, we had a game of croquet on the lawn, the smell of roses hanging in the air around us.
Back up at the castle, the views of the surrounding mountains were typically Welsh and beautiful, the mist just drifting off. We visited the museum, which featured a collection of Indian antiques curated by one of the castle’s long lost owners. My youngest son fell in love with a golden be-jewelled tiger’s head and the awesome array of weapons. Powis Castle is the National Trust at its best. A place that inspires both the young and old.
